Whether adding cabinets works depends on "whether they can match": the board color, door panel craftsmanship, and edge banding method all need to match; otherwise, there will be obvious color differences or edge profile differences between the old and new. If the original color is discontinued, a common approach is to choose a close match within the same color family and place the new cabinets in non-adjacent positions.
