How to Choose Custom Cabinet Doors: 6 Door Types, Their Production, Pros and Cons

Cabinet doors are the most visible part of custom furniture: they define the look, the feel and everyday durability. The door types our factory commonly produces are melamine-faced, PET, vacuum-formed, lacquered, wood-veneer and solid wood. Their production, strengths and weaknesses, and suitable styles differ.

1. Melamine-faced door panels.
Can be matched to the cabinet body colour and are the most versatile option: wear- and scratch-resistant, available in matt wood grain and solid colours, cost-effective, the first choice for flat slab doors, and no painting is required.

2. PET door panels.

Available with high-gloss or soft-touch (skin-feel) PET film: smooth to the touch with a strong visual finish. Weaknesses: the surface film scratches easily, and single-sided PET doors tend to warp.

3. Vacuum-formed (membrane-pressed) door panels.
The substrate is usually MDF, with PVC film shaped by vacuum forming. Curved and grooved profiles are possible, which suits French, European, Chinese and new-Chinese styles.

4. Lacquered door panels.
MDF substrate with multiple coats of lacquer, sanded between coats, producing a mirror-like high-gloss finish for a light-luxury look. Weaknesses: they are prone to impact damage and the price is higher.

5. Wood-veneer door panels.
A 0.6–1.2 mm natural wood veneer is applied to a substrate (particleboard, OSB or MDF) and finished with wood wax oil or lacquer, giving a feel close to solid wood. Common in high-end customisation.

6. Solid wood door panels.
A single piece of solid timber or a solid wood frame-and-panel door. Commonly used species include black walnut, red oak, white ash and rubberwood.

Choose on three dimensions: style — flat and minimal suits melamine-faced or PET, shaped profiles suit vacuum-formed, high-gloss light-luxury suits lacquer; budget and durability — melamine-faced offers the best value, while lacquer and solid wood cost more and need care; texture — wood veneer is closest to a natural wood feel, while solid wood gives real timber. Also confirm that door colour, edge banding and hardware match the cabinet body.
